Security personnel patrol Gulma Town, Kebbi State, after a farmer-herder clash left eight people dead and forced authorities to impose a curfew
Eight people have been killed in a violent clash between farmers and herders in Gulma Town, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, forcing authorities to impose a curfew and deploy additional security personnel to the area.
The Kebbi State Police Command said the violence erupted on Monday following a dispute over farmland and resulted in the deaths of one farmer and seven herders.
Police spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, said the crisis began when a herder identified as Yaron Buba Dogo allegedly allowed his cattle to stray into the farmland of Aminu Ala, destroying crops.
According to the police, the farmer was fatally stabbed in the neck during the confrontation.
Usman said the killing triggered a reprisal attack by an angry mob which killed the herder and set his body ablaze.
The mob subsequently attacked other members of the affected community. Police said four additional victims were killed and their bodies burnt beyond recognition despite efforts by security operatives to contain the violence.
