FCT Police operatives during an anti-kidnapping operation in Abuja following a failed abduction attempt in Byazhin
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has foiled a kidnap attempt in Abuja’s Byazhin area, rescued two residents unharmed and recovered an AK-47 rifle with ammunition during a gun battle with suspected kidnappers.
The command said operatives of its Anti-Kidnapping Unit carried out the operation in the early hours of Friday following intelligence reports about the movement of suspected kidnappers around the Redeemed Church area near Paze Hills, Byazhin.
According to a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the operatives, led by the Officer Commanding the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, mobilised to the area at about 12:34 a.m.
Adeh said the police team arrived at the scene and discovered that the armed suspects were attempting to break into a residential building to abduct the occupants.
She explained that the suspects opened fire on the operatives on sight, leading to a gun battle that lasted more than 30 minutes.
The police operatives successfully repelled the attackers and prevented the abduction, while the suspects escaped into nearby bushes with gunshot wounds.
The command recovered one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine and seven rounds of live ammunition from the scene.
