Federal Government approves increased allowances and new welfare benefits for civil servants to boost morale and financial security.
The Federal Government has approved a major increase in allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants to boost take-home pay and improve morale.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, announced the reforms on Friday in Abuja after the Federal Executive Council gave approval.
The review covers workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS).
Government Increases Allowances Across Board
The government has raised peculiar allowances across all grade levels, increasing earnings for both junior and senior officers.
It has also reviewed and updated key benefits, including Duty Tour Allowance (DTA), estacode and book allowance, alongside nearly all allowances captured under Public Service Rules.
These changes aim to improve workers’ welfare amid rising economic pressure.
Civil Servants to Receive Full DTA for Training
The government now allows civil servants to receive 100 percent Duty Tour Allowance for approved training programmes, even when they do not travel.
“Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” Walson-Jack said.
Officials say the decision will encourage capacity building and professional development across the public service.
FG Introduces New Retirement Package
The government has approved a new exit benefit for retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Under the new policy:
- Retirees will receive 100 percent of their total annual emoluments at retirement
- The policy takes effect from January 1, 2026
- The payment comes in addition to existing pension benefits
Authorities say the package will strengthen financial security and ensure dignity after service.
Worker Protection Scheme Gets Boost
The government has also confirmed the rollout of the Employee Compensation Scheme to support workers facing job-related risks.
The scheme will provide support in cases of:
- Work-related injury
- Death in service
Why It Matters
The reforms come as rising living costs continue to strain public servants and increase pressure from labour unions.
Analysts say the measures could improve productivity, enhance job satisfaction and reduce workforce attrition within the civil service.
