Nigeria celebrate a dominant win over Ghana while Rwanda clinch a last-over victory against South Africa in Day 3 U-19 action.
Day 3 of the tournament underscored widening performance gaps and rising competitive intensity, as Nigeria delivered a crushing win over Ghana, while Rwanda held firm under pressure to defeat South Africa Women’s U-19 in a tense, rain-affected encounter.
Nigeria reinforced their status
Nigeria reinforced their status as title contenders with a comprehensive 136-run victory over Ghana, combining aggressive batting with disciplined bowling to dominate all phases of the game.
Opting to bat after winning the toss, Nigeria set the tone early as captain Piety Luck and Victory Igbinedion powered a rapid start, racing to 44 runs within three overs. Although Luck fell after a quick 23 off 17 balls, Nigeria maintained control through the innings.
Christabel Chukwuonye anchored the middle overs with a commanding 43 off 27 deliveries, guiding the team to a formidable total of 159 for 4 in 20 overs.

Ghana’s response exposed deep batting vulnerabilities, as they crumbled under sustained pressure from Nigeria’s bowlers. Reduced to 13 for 5 within seven overs, the chase effectively ended before it began.
Peace Usen led the bowling assault with an outstanding spell of 3 for 9, supported by Mbam Henrietta (3 for 7) and Favour Effiong (2 for 2), as Ghana were dismissed for just 23 runs — one of the lowest totals in the tournament.
Usen’s performance earned her the Player of the Match award.
Rwanda’s clash with South Africa
In contrast, Rwanda’s clash with South Africa Women’s U-19 highlighted the fine margins that define competitive cricket, with the match going down to the final over.
Rwanda made a confident start after choosing to bat, with Gisele Ishimwe and Fanny Utagushimaninde finding early boundaries before South Africa clawed back with key wickets.

A rain interruption reduced the match to 14 overs per side, testing both teams’ adaptability. Rwanda adjusted effectively, with contributions from Clarisse Umotoniwase (26), Utagushimaninde (24), and Uwase Merveille (17) helping them post 101 for 7.
South Africa’s chase remained steady, anchored by captain Mieke Van Voorst, who scored 34 off 27 balls. With 11 runs required from the final over and wickets in hand, the match was evenly poised.
However, Rwanda held their nerve under pressure, restricting scoring opportunities in the closing moments to secure a narrow 5-run victory, as South Africa finished on 100 for 4.
Alice Ikuzwe was named Player of the Match for her decisive impact.
Tournament Implications
Nigeria’s emphatic win marks their second victory, strengthening their campaign and highlighting their balance in both batting and bowling.
Rwanda, meanwhile, remain unbeaten with three wins from three matches, consolidating their position at the top of the standings.
With momentum building and stakes rising, the tournament is shaping into a tightly contested race, with both dominant performances and last-over dramas setting the tone for the days ahead.
