Nigeria reinforced their championship credentials with a victory over Ghana, while Rwanda extended their unbeaten run after edging South Africa Women’s U-19 in a tense, last-over finish on Day 3 of the tournament.
Nigeria Deliver Statement Win
Nigeria produced one of the most dominant performances of the competition, dismantling Ghana by 136 runs in a one-sided encounter defined by explosive batting and ruthless bowling.
Captain Piety Luck and Victory Igbinedion set the tone early, powering Nigeria to a rapid 44 within three overs. Although Piety fell for a quickfire 23 off 17 balls, Nigeria maintained control through the middle phase.
Christabel Chukwuonye anchored the innings with an aggressive 43 off 27 balls, guiding the hosts to a commanding total of 159 for 4 in 20 overs.
Ghana’s response never materialised, as Nigeria’s bowlers struck relentlessly. The innings collapsed to 13 for 5 inside seven overs, effectively ending the contest.
Peace Usen led the charge with an outstanding spell of 3 wickets for 9 runs, including a maiden over. She was supported by Mbam Henrietta (3 for 7) and Favour Effiong (2 for 2), as Ghana were bowled out for just 23.
Usen was named Player of the Match for her exceptional performance.
Rwanda Hold Nerve in High-Stakes Clash
In contrast, Rwanda and South Africa Women’s U-19 delivered a tightly contested encounter that went down to the final over.
Rwanda made a solid start after electing to bat, with Gisele Ishimwe and Fanny Utagushimaninde providing early momentum before South Africa fought back with timely breakthroughs.
A rain interruption reduced the match to 14 overs per side, but Rwanda adapted well. Contributions from Clarisse Umotoniwase (26), Utagushimaninde (24), and Uwase Merveille (17) helped them post 101 for 7.
South Africa’s chase, led by captain Mieke Van Voorst, remained composed, with her 34 off 27 balls keeping the contest finely balanced.
However, with 11 runs needed in the final over, Rwanda held their nerve. South Africa failed to capitalise on the opening deliveries, allowing Rwanda to restrict them to 100 for 4 and secure a dramatic 5-run victory.
Alice Ikuzwe earned Player of the Match honours for her decisive impact.
Momentum Builds at the Top
The results see Nigeria secure their second win of the tournament, strengthening their position among the leading contenders.
Rwanda, meanwhile, remain unbeaten with three wins from three matches, consolidating their place at the top of the standings.
With dominant displays and last-over drama shaping proceedings, the tournament continues to gather intensity as teams battle for supremacy.
