The Federal Government will employ 50 medical doctors and 100 nurses to serve in correctional centres across Nigeria, following approval by President Bola Tinubu.
The Minister of Interior, Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on Tuesday during a courtesy visit from the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in Abuja, explaining that the move addresses a shortage of medical personnel in some prison hospitals.

He noted that the correctional centre hospital in River State currently had no doctor on staff.
“The President understands that he is the President of all Nigerians, including those inmates. And as father to all, he has always shown that he cares,” Tunji-Ojo said. Some correctional centres, such as Kuje, are now equipped to perform major surgeries.

The minister also highlighted efforts to build skills among inmates through train-the-trainer programmes.
“We now empower graduates to train others. We have also increased feeding allowances by 50 per cent,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo further stressed the importance of collaboration with the Ministry of Information to communicate the Ministry of Interior’s achievements, citing initiatives like mine marshals in partnership with the Ministry of Solid Minerals to secure minefields, reduce criminality, and protect critical national assets.
