Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, says strategic market systems are essential to transforming subsistence farming into profitable and competitive agricultural value chains.
Kyari made the remark on Tuesday in Abuja while receiving a delegation from Heifer International led by its President and Chief Executive Officer, Surita Sandosham.

The minister said well-designed market systems connect smallholder farmers to higher-value markets, increasing their income and strengthening economic resilience.
He noted that improved market strategies could also attract private sector investment in agricultural services and reduce dependence on aid.

Kyari added that digital platforms and better access to market information would help farmers negotiate fair prices and reduce exploitation by middlemen.
He cited agribusiness platforms such as Thrive Agric and others as examples of innovations helping scale agribusiness services and strengthen agricultural value chains.

In her remarks, Sandosham said Heifer International aims to help two million Nigerian households achieve a sustainable living income by 2030, adding that the organisation is working with the ministry and International Fund for Agricultural Development to harmonise the National Digital Farmers’ Registry to ensure support reaches verified farmers.
