Tensions are high in Benin City following the arrest of four officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) over the alleged murder of a Bolt driver, Henry Osarodion.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with e-hailing drivers under the aegis of the E-hailing Drivers Association staging a protest at the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
They demanded accountability and swift justice for their slain colleague.
According to Festus Nwabuzor, spokesperson for the association, Osarodion had just dropped off a passenger at Castle Hotel when he allegedly almost hit an NSCDC officer.
In response, the officer purportedly assaulted Osarodion, detained him at their office on Off-Limit Road, and held him from midnight until 5 p.m.
Nwabuzor called for a comprehensive investigation, urging the police to examine CCTV footage to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Another Bolt driver, Mr. Rosor, appealed to the Edo State government to intervene, emphasizing the need for justice in line with the administration’s promise to protect its citizens.
In a statement to NSA, NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Efosa Ogbebor, claimed their officers were only trying to disperse a fight when a mob took control, prompting them to withdraw and hand the matter over to the police for safety and investigation.
Confirming the incident, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, revealed that the four NSCDC officers are currently in police custody.
He assured the public that Commissioner of Police, Betty Osetimeyin, has ordered a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
CSP Yamu pledged that the police would pursue the case vigorously, reinforcing their commitment to justice and public safety in Edo State.Reporter:
