President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.
In a statement on Tuesday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga says Mr Egbetokun stepped down due to family reasons.
The President thanked him for his decades of dedicated service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country.
Mr Egbetokun was appointed in June 2023 for a four year term expected to end in June 2027 under the amended Police Act.
Following his exit, President Tinubu named Assistant Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector General of Police with immediate effect.
The President said ASP Disu has the experience to lead the force at a time of security challenges across the country.
He noted that the Nigeria Police Council will meet in line with the Police Act 2020 to consider ASP Disu for confirmation as substantive police chief. His name will then be forwarded to the Senate.
The President said his government remains committed to improving security, strengthening police capacity and promoting professionalism as well as accountability in the force.
