Enugu State Police have dismantled a suspected human trafficking operation linked to prostitution, arresting a 50-year-old woman and rescuing a 20-year-old female victim.
The Enugu State Police Command said in a statement on Wednesday that the arrest and rescue took place on January 16, 2026, after officers at Igbo-Eze South Police Division acted on credible intelligence.
Investigations revealed that the victim, from Abia State, was allegedly lured from her job in Aba with promises of a higher-paying position in Senegal. The police said the opportunity later turned out to be related to prostitution.
On the same day, the suspect, identified as Ibekwe Nkiru and based in the Amorji-Nike area of Enugu, allegedly took the victim to a shrine in Alor-Agu Community. The visit was reportedly ordered by other syndicate members, who are still at large, for the victim to swear an oath before being trafficked.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the syndicate fully, identify all members, and ensure their prosecution. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to fighting human trafficking and related crimes and urged the public to continue providing credible information to support police efforts.
