Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers has launched a statewide mobilisation campaign aimed at significantly increasing the number of residents registered for the National Identification Number (NIN) and Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
The Chairman of the council, Eze Linus Nto-Mba, announced the initiative on Monday during a council meeting in Umuahia, attended by principal officers and chairmen of traditional rulers from the state’s 17 local government areas.
Eze Nto-Mba said the decision followed concerns over Abia’s low registration figures, despite its sizeable population. He noted that traditional rulers have resolved to take direct responsibility for mobilising eligible citizens aged 18 and above who are yet to register.
According to him, the exercise is non-political and driven solely by the state’s development interests. The council plans to adopt a grassroots approach, extending the campaign from the state level to zones, local governments, and autonomous communities to ensure wider coverage.

He added that the council would also assess the availability of registration facilities, including equipment, personnel, and logistics, through visits to relevant registration centres.
The meeting ended with a renewed commitment by the traditional rulers to support efforts that promote civic participation, accurate population data, and inclusive development in Abia State.
