Uganda’s Electoral Commission says early provisional results from Thursday’s presidential election show President Yoweri Museveni leading with 61.7 percent of votes counted so far.
According to Electoral Commission chairperson Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, a total of 23,049 valid votes have been tallied, while 796 ballots were declared invalid. The 81-year-old leader is seeking to extend his nearly four-decade rule.

Byabakama described the election as “generally peaceful” and said vote counting has concluded in many areas. He urged all candidates, their agents, and supporters to remain calm and tolerant as results are officially declared.
The elections followed a tense campaign marked by an internet blackout and delays caused by technical failures in several polling stations. Despite these challenges, the commission said counting is progressing steadily, with full results expected soon.
