House of River State Assembly Seal
Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their earlier call for reconciliation and now back the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
At a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Friday, the lawmakers said the governor failed to show remorse or seek a political solution to the prolonged crisis between the executive and the legislature.
Minority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma constituency), said the decision followed alleged attacks on lawmakers by aides linked to the governor and his deputy.
He explained that a plea made on January 12 for dialogue had been abandoned because, according to him, the governor chose confrontation over compromise.
Another lawmaker, Peter Abbey, said the matter should not be seen through an ethnic lens, describing it as a constitutional issue. He accused the governor and deputy of breaching the constitution and supported the continuation of the impeachment process.

Deputy Minority Leader, Barile Nwakoh (Khana I), alleged intimidation of lawmakers and warned that the situation posed a threat to democracy. She, however, praised President Bola Tinubu’s earlier intervention in the crisis.
Emilia Lucky-Amadi (Obio/Akpor II) said the governor ignored efforts at dialogue and showed no willingness to govern within constitutional limits.
The Rivers State House of Assembly had earlier initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct. On Friday, the House also approved the request for the Chief Judge to set up a probe panel.
