Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the release of seven convicted inmates from correctional facilities across the state, exercising his constitutional prerogative of mercy.
The decision, announced on Tuesday, forms part of activities marking the governor’s 61st birthday, according to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan.
The latest clemency comes shortly after a broader New Year gesture by the governor on January 1, 2026, when the sentences of 77 inmates were commuted based on recommendations from the Ondo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

According to the statement, the seven beneficiaries were selected after a thorough review process that considered verified reports of genuine remorse, good behaviour, commitment to rehabilitation and clear prospects for successful reintegration into society.
“Their outright release underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s firm belief in the principles of restorative justice, prison decongestion, and the provision of second chances to those who have demonstrated meaningful change,” the statement said.
The Chairman of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, Kayode Ajulo, SAN, praised the governor’s decision, describing it as thoughtful and forward-looking. He said the action reflects the administration’s resolve to strike a balance between accountability and compassion.
Ajulo added that the move reinforces the government’s commitment to justice sector reforms and the promotion of a society where rehabilitation and redemption remain achievable goals.
