Rescue teams search for children trapped beneath the rubble after a school roof collapsed in Peshawar, killing 28 people
A school roof collapse in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, has killed 28 people, including 27 pupils and a teacher, and injured more than 30 others, hospital officials say.
Asim Khan of Lady Reading Hospital confirmed the deaths to AFP on Thursday, adding that six injured victims remained in critical condition.
Rescue teams deployed more than 60 personnel, 16 ambulances and two disaster response vehicles to search for children trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue 1122 spokesman Bilal Ahmad Faizi warned that more pupils could still be buried under the debris.
The incident has raised concerns about building safety, with resident Sher Ahmed blaming what he described as substandard construction materials and demanding an investigation.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, and President Asif Ali Zardari expressed condolences to the affected families as rescue operations continued.
