President Bola Tinubu prepares to officially send off Team Nigeria ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will today officially bid farewell to Team Nigeria as the nation steps up preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The send-off ceremony, scheduled to hold at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes as they embark on their quest for Commonwealth glory.

Following the ceremony, Team Nigeria will depart for a three-week pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, where athletes will fine-tune their preparations ahead of the Games, which will take place from July 23 to August 2.
Nigeria will be represented by 74 athletes competing in 10 sports, with the contingent targeting another impressive performance on the international stage.

The team will be looking to build on its outstanding campaign at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where Nigeria emerged as Africa’s top-performing nation after winning 35 medals—12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.
The presidential farewell is expected to serve as a major morale booster as Team Nigeria aims to once again fly the nation’s flag high and reinforce its status as one of Africa’s leading sporting powers.
