The United States and Australia made strong statements in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, securing convincing victories to move to the top of Group D.
Co-hosts United States thrilled home supporters in Los Angeles with a 4-1 victory over Paraguay, by a performance from striker Folarin Balogun.

The Americans seized control from the outset and were rewarded in the seventh minute when Paraguay defender Damian Bobadilla turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie.
Balogun then took charge of proceedings, doubling the lead in the 31st minute before striking again into first-half stoppage time to send Mauricio Pochettino’s side into the break with a 3-0 advantage.

Paraguay briefly threatened a fightback when Mauricio reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute, however substitute Giovanni Reyna produced a finish to complete a 4-1 win.
Balogun’s brace secured his place in United States football history, making him only the second American player to score twice in a FIFA World Cup match.

Earlier in Vancouver, Australia also began their campaign in impressive fashion, defeating Turkey 2-0 to claim all three points.
Rising star Nestory Irankunda announced himself on the biggest stage by becoming the youngest Australian to score at a FIFA World Cup, giving the Socceroos a lead
Connor Metcalfe added a second-half goal to put the result beyond doubt and cap an impressive team performance.
