There was panic in Ondo State on Monday, after suspected thugs disrupted the senatorial primary election of the All Progressives Congress APC in Akure by firing gunshots into the air.
The incident occurred at Ward 5 on Oke-Lisa/Amudipe Street in Akure South Local Government Area, where party delegates had gathered to participate in the primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Delegates who had queued to cast their votes reportedly fled the venue in different directions in search of safety.
Parents Withdraw Pupils as Fear Spreads
The disturbance also caused anxiety in nearby schools, forcing several parents and guardians to hurriedly withdraw their children following the sound of gunshots around the area.
Schools affected included Ebenezer Primary School and St. Peter A/C Primary School located close to the venue of the exercise.
Residents in parts of Akure were reportedly alarmed as the gunshots echoed across sections of the state capital.
Senator Adegbonmire Leaves Venue
Among those said to be present during the incident was Adeniyi Adegbonmire, one of the aspirants contesting in the APC senatorial primary.
Sources said the lawmaker left the venue hurriedly after the shooting began to avoid possible harm.
As of the time of filing this report, there were no confirmed casualties or arrests linked to the disruption, while party officials had yet to release an official statement on the incident.
The APC senatorial primary comes days after the party concluded its House of Representatives primaries held between May 16 and 17, which reportedly produced major political upsets and intense competition among aspirants nationwide.
