Anambra State Government has warned churches located close to schools to stop activities that disrupt teaching through excessive noise.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, issued the warning on Wednesday following a complaint by a private school in Onitsha over noise from a nearby church.
The school alleged that Divine Dominion Prophetic Ministry, located opposite its premises, runs loud services on weekdays, especially Tuesdays, from 10am to 4pm, disrupting classes. The school said repeated appeals to the church had failed.
Chuma-Udeh said the state would not tolerate actions that deny students their right to learn in a calm environment. She noted that noise pollution is an offence under Nigerian law.

She directed the church to move its weekday activities to start from 4pm, after school hours, warning that failure to comply would attract sanctions involving the Ministry of Environment.
The commissioner added that while churches may hold services freely on weekends, school activities and external examinations such as WAEC, NECO and JAMB must take priority.
Responding, an assistant pastor of the church, Emmanuel Ukpabi, said the church would cooperate and seek peaceful coexistence with the school.
