Venezuelan officials respond to U.S. military operations against Maduro.
The US government says on Saturday, that it had filed drug-related and terrorist charges against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and conducted a military operation in Venezuela that, according to Washington, culminated in his capture.
In a social media tweet early Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had carried out a “large-scale strike” against Venezuela, arresting Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Trump stated that the operation was carried out in cooperation with US law enforcement and that both individuals had been flown out of the country. A news conference was slated for later Saturday at Trump’s Mar-A-Lago estate in Florida.
The United States has long accused Maduro and his associates of engaging in narco-terrorism and drug trafficking.

In 2020, a US federal indictment charged Maduro and many Venezuelan officials with narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and other offenses; Maduro has continuously denied these charges.
Details about the operation and charges.
According to US officials, the strike occurred in the early hours of Saturday. Explosions were reported in and around Caracas and other regions, and low-flying planes were spotted above major cities. The operation targeted Venezuela’s military facilities and critical areas.

Trump’s announcement indicated that Maduro was detained and flown out of Venezuela, but it did not explain where he and Flores were taken or provide any immediate specifics on judicial proceedings.
A top US legislator said the Venezuelan leader is likely to face prosecution in US courts, where he has previously been indicted.
Venezuelan Government’s Reaction
The Venezuelan administration fiercely criticized the US strikes, condemning them as acts of military aggression and a breach of national sovereignty. Officials said that the strikes hit both civilian and military objectives, and they proclaimed a state of emergency in response.
Following allegations of Maduro’s abduction, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez demanded quick evidence of life and clarity on his whereabouts. The Venezuelan government also called for a mobilization against what they termed as an imperialist invasion.
The US military has been putting pressure on Venezuela for months, with strikes on suspected drug trafficking operations, the seizure of oil tankers, and a strong naval presence in the Caribbean and nearby waterways. U.S. officials have linked members of the Venezuelan administration to narcotics and terrorist networks, which Maduro’s government denies.
Global leaders’ reactions were divided. Some states expressed alarm about the use of force and urged respect for international law, while others backed efforts to hold Maduro accountable for criminal accusations. As the situation has progressed, there have been calls for de-escalation and diplomatic engagement.
As details emerge, huge doubts remain concerning Maduro and Flores’ legal status, actual location, and the broader geopolitical ramifications of the US intervention. The planned press event later Saturday was intended to provide additional information about these developments.
Why This Matters
This episode marks a drastic escalation in US-Venezuela relations, involving direct military action and the potential prosecution of a sitting president. It raises serious concerns about international law, regional stability, and the survival of Venezuela’s administration.
