President Bola Tinubu has postponed his G20 Summit visit to South Africa to address the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi and a bandit attack on worshippers in Kwara.
President Bola Tinubu has postponed his planned visit to South Africa for the G20 Leaders’ Summit to focus on escalating security concerns in Kebbi and Kwara States.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President is awaiting detailed briefings from Vice President Kashim Shettima on the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, and the recent attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.
“Disturbed by the security breaches in Kebbi State and Monday’s attack by bandits against worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, President Tinubu decided to suspend his departure,” Onanuga said on Wednesday.
The President has also ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area, directing the police to pursue the bandits responsible for the attack. The directive follows a request from the Governor of Kwara State.
Officials noted that Tinubu wants first-hand reports from Kebbi, including outcomes of meetings with local leaders, before proceeding with his international trips. He was originally scheduled to attend the 20th G20 Summit in South Africa and subsequently the 7th AU-EU Summit in Luanda, Angola.
Onanuga confirmed that the President had instructed security agencies to prioritize the rescue of the abducted schoolgirls. “He now awaits reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who paid a sympathy visit to Kebbi on his behalf, as well as reports from the police and the Department of State Services regarding the attack in Kwara,” he said.
President Tinubu had previously expressed deep concern over the abduction and the killing of the school’s Vice-Principal, noting that the incident occurred despite intelligence warnings of a possible bandit strike.
