The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of an imminent nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to meet its outstanding demands within 14 days.
The decision followed the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday at the University of Abuja.
ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, told reporters in Abuja that the government’s continued neglect of the university system has left the union with no choice but to escalate.
“At the NEC meeting held on September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja, the union decried the neglect of the university system and the government’s consistent refusal to meet its demands,” Piwuna said.
“Accordingly, ASUU has given the Federal Government of Nigeria an ultimatum of fourteen (14) days within which to address these issues. If at the end of the ultimatum the government fails to act, the union may have no option but to first embark on a two-week warning strike, and thereafter, a total and indefinite strike.”
The union’s seven-point demands include improved funding for universities, the release of unpaid academic allowances, and the implementation of agreements previously signed with the Federal Government.
ASUU’s latest warning raises fears of another disruption to Nigeria’s public university calendar, which has already been heavily affected by prolonged industrial actions in recent years. Students and parents have begun voicing concern over the potential strike, urging the government to act swiftly to prevent a nationwide shutdown of campuses.
