Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially inaugurated the National Organising Committee for the maiden Independence Under-19 Football Cup 2025.
This now sets the stage for a tournament aimed at youth empowerment, unity, and talent discovery.
The competition, scheduled for September 25 – October 1, 2025, is part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
Representing NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, the Secretary-General, Mohammad Sanusi, said the initiative reflects the federation’s mission to use football as a tool for national cohesion and youth development.
“What they are trying to do is not just about football but ensuring that Independence celebrations in Nigeria can compete globally. Along the way, we may also discover new talents to unite the country,” Sanusi said.
Youth Empowerment and National Unity
Ambassador Sadiq Naseeb Danpullo, President of the Inter-Sports Promoters Association (ISPA) and Chair of the Committee, said the idea was born out of the need to meaningfully engage young people during Independence.
He explained that the tournament will create job opportunities, promote self-reliance, and address pressing issues like insecurity, unemployment, and drug abuse.
Hon. Andrew Tyonongo, Secretary of the Committee, called the event a “historic step in Nigeria’s sports calendar,” stressing its alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on youth empowerment.
Tournament Structure
Zone A Matches: Nyanya Mopol Junction Pitch
Zone B Matches: Area 3 Football Pitch, Abuja
Final: October 1, Moshood Abiola National Stadium Main Bowl
The grand finale coincides with Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations and will serve as a national showcase for young talent.
Organisers say the competition will act as a springboard for future professional footballers, offering a platform for scouts and national selectors. Beyond sports, it aims to foster patriotism, unity, and discipline among Nigerian youth.
As Hon. Tyonongo summed up:
“Our task is to deliver a transparent, successful, and memorable tournament that inspires hope. This is the stage for Nigerian youth—rise and shine.”
