The Federal Government has reinstated Nigerian History as a compulsory subject in the national basic education curriculum, aiming to strengthen national identity, unity, and patriotism among young Nigerians.
A statement from the Ministry of Education outlined that pupils will now study Nigerian History continuously from Primary One to Junior Secondary School Three. For Senior Secondary School students, a new subject, Civic and Heritage Studies, has been introduced to integrate Nigerian History with Civic Education.

The Ministry emphasized that the revised curriculum has been released and pledged to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure its effective implementation. This includes providing teaching resources, retraining educators, and strengthening monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
“We urge parents, teachers, and communities to embrace this reform,” the statement read, describing it as a priceless gift to the nation that reconnects children with their roots while inspiring pride and commitment to Nigeria’s development.
Education officials believe this move will equip students with the knowledge, values, and civic awareness necessary to respect diversity, uphold national institutions, and contribute positively to society.
