Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu leads a memorial parade in Abuja for 17 officers killed in a terrorist attack in Yobe State.
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Johnson Elleh for allegedly producing and circulating a misleading video claiming that kidnapping and banditry activities were taking place along the Owode-Idiroko axis of the state.
Police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta, saying the command launched an immediate investigation after the video went viral on social media.
According to the police, investigations revealed that the claims contained in the video were false and intended to create fear and panic among residents.
Babaseyi said detectives carried out extensive verification and found no evidence of any kidnapping or banditry incident in the Owode-Idiroko area or surrounding communities as portrayed in the footage.
The police further discovered that the suspect appeared in the video and was later identified and arrested during the investigation.
Preliminary findings, according to the command, showed that the suspect deliberately created and circulated the false content to attract public attention and generate online engagement.
The police noted that the action had the potential to trigger public anxiety, disrupt social order and weaken public confidence in the state’s security system.
