Police officers participate in an environmental sanitation exercise in Abuja as part of activities marking National Police Day 2026
The Nigeria Police Force has renewed its commitment to strengthening community trust and improving service delivery through people-focused initiatives in the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking during an environmental sanitation exercise held in Abuja, to commemorate the 2026 National Police Day, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, explained that the activity forms part of broader programmes approved by the Inspector-General of Police to enhance police-community relations.
“These include medical outreach, community engagement, and sanitation campaigns designed to bridge the trust gap between law enforcement and citizens”.

The commissioner emphasized that modern policing goes beyond enforcement to include active participation in community development.
He noted that the initiative reflects a strategic shift towards more inclusive and approachable policing, where officers are seen as partners in societal well-being rather than distant authority figures.

The sanitation exercise also highlighted the importance of environmental hygiene as a public health concern, reinforcing the role of collective responsibility in maintaining clean and safe communities.

Residents’ positive response, including cheers and participation, was described as a strong indication of growing public acceptance and renewed confidence in the police.
