The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has defended its protests in parts of the North, describing them as a peaceful show of solidarity with Iran and a reaffirmation of its long-standing opposition to aggression against Muslim nations.
Ammar Muhammad, President of the IMN Media Forum, said the demonstrations aimed to clarify the group’s stance and correct misconceptions.
“The general public should understand that this protest is not a defensive action but a clarification of our position. It is meant to correct misconceptions and reaffirm our historical stance against oppression and oppressors,” Muhammad said.

He accused Israel and the United States of engaging in attacks on Iran and criticized global powers for contributing to geopolitical challenges affecting Muslims, Africans, and other developing societies.
Muhammad emphasized that the movement, led by Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, has for nearly five decades advocated for justice, social reform, and a just social order rooted in Islamic principles.
“Historically, the movement has consistently stood with oppressed people across the world, from the East to the West,” he said.
Muhammad clarified that the IMN is not a sectarian organisation, despite many members being Shi’a Muslims. The protests, he added, were peaceful expressions of solidarity with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who holds both political and religious significance within Shi’a Islam.
