The All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his open support for APC candidates in the February 21 FCT Area Council elections, insisting he acted within his constitutional rights.
Speaking on a televised interview on Monday, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka dismissed criticisms of Wike’s involvement in the polls, which saw the APC clinch five of the six area councils.
“If Nyesom Wike wants to go on campaigning for any candidate in any party whatsoever, he has the inherent liberty to do so,” Morka said.
“Wike is a citizen of the Federal Capital Republic of Nigeria who also has freedom guaranteed by the constitution.
“He has the right to support any candidate he wants.”
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, had publicly backed APC candidates in the FCT elections — a move that sparked debate given his political history.
However, the APC spokesman maintained that political choice and association remain constitutionally protected rights, regardless of party lines.
