The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mohammed Kasim, has won the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election in Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) local government polls.
Announcing the result, the Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Philip Akpen, said Kasim secured 22,165 votes to defeat Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 17,788 votes.
Biko Umar, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, came third with 1,687 votes.
The election was conducted across the six Area Councils of the FCT, with voters turning out to elect chairmen and councillors. Electoral officials described the exercise in Gwagwalada as peaceful and orderly, with voting and counting completed without major incidents.

Kasim’s victory gives the PDP control of the Gwagwalada council, a key area within the FCT, and may shape political dynamics in the territory as more results are announced.
Collation of results from the remaining Area Councils is ongoing, and the electoral body is expected to release further declarations in the coming hours.
