Two-time Nigerian national champion and Commonwealth Games medallist Favour Ashe has officially transferred his sporting allegiance to Qatar, citing longstanding concerns over athlete welfare and support structures in Nigeria.
The sprinter confirmed the decision in an interview, pointing to inadequate training facilities and what he described as poor treatment during his time representing Nigeria on the international stage.

Ashe, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most promising sprint talents, said persistent structural challenges ultimately influenced his move.
While he did not dismiss his achievements with Team Nigeria, he indicated that the need for better professional conditions and stability played a decisive role in seeking opportunities abroad.
His switch is expected to bolster Qatar’s sprint programme, while also reigniting conversations about athlete management, funding and infrastructure within Nigerian athletics.
