Nigeria’s Ministry of Women Affairs has asked lawmakers to approve increased funding in the 2026 budget to strengthen programmes supporting women, children and vulnerable families.
The Minister, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, made the request on Tuesday during the ministry’s budget defence before the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs at the National Assembly in Abuja.
She said limited capital releases in 2025 slowed the full implementation of key projects, despite prudent management of personnel and operational funds.
The proposed 2026 budget, she explained, aims to close funding gaps and expand programmes focused on women’s economic empowerment, child welfare and family stability.

The minister urged lawmakers to support the proposal, saying stronger funding would improve services for vulnerable households and align with President Bola Tinubu’s family-focused policies.
Committee Chairperson Kafilat Ogbara said the ministry plays a critical role in addressing gender-based violence, healthcare access, education and economic challenges facing women.
She said lawmakers would review the proposal carefully to ensure it reflects national priorities, especially for rural women, women with disabilities and survivors of violence.
Both sides agreed that stronger collaboration with government agencies and development partners is needed to deliver measurable results.
The final decision on the allocation will form part of the wider 2026 federal budget process.
