Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, the Chief Imam of Yelwa, Gindin Akwati, in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, who gives shelter to hundred of christian when attacked has passed away.
The late cleric became popularly known in June 2018 when armed attackers stormed several communities in Barkin Ladi.
During the attacks, Imam Abdullahi opened his mosque and personal residence to shelter hundreds of Christians, reportedly saving about 300 lives. He refused to hand them over despite threats to his own life, an act widely praised as a symbol of courage and interfaith harmony.
His bravery earned him international recognition, including the International Freedom Award presented by the United States in 2019.

Reacting to his death, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, in a statement signed on Friday by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, described the late Imam as a man of peace and exceptional character.
The governor commended his unwavering commitment to unity, protection of the vulnerable especially women and children and peaceful coexistence.
He extended his condolences to the family, noting that Imam Abdullahi lived a life of faith, compassion, and fairness, leaving behind a lasting legacy of service and harmony.
