Ebonyi State Government announces sweeping education reforms, banning nursery and primary school graduations while introducing compulsory entrepreneurship and skill acquisition training.
The Ebonyi State Government has banned graduation ceremonies for pre-nursery, nursery, and primary school pupils, to improve education standards.
The directive, announced in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Education (Primary and Secondary), Donatus Ilang, says only students completing Junior Secondary School (JSS3) and Senior Secondary School (SS3) will now hold graduation ceremonies.
“The government resolved that graduation ceremonies are exclusively reserved for pupils and students who have successfully completed basic education (JSS3) and Senior Secondary (SS3).
In view of the above, pre-basic (kindergarten/nursery) and Primary 6 are banned from holding graduation ceremonies forthwith,” the statement read.
The reforms also ban compulsory after-school lessons, mandate the use of government-approved textbooks, and direct the closure of unapproved private and faith-based schools. Parents have been advised to transfer their wards to accredited institutions.
In addition, the state has introduced compulsory Entrepreneurship and Skill Acquisition courses, with students expected to graduate with certificates in those areas alongside their First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) or Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
“The introduction of Entrepreneurship and Skill Acquisition is to ensure our students do not only pass through school but also leave with practical knowledge,” the statement added.
The Ebonyi Government described the measures as a strategic effort to instill discipline, standardize learning, and prepare students for higher education and the job market.
