House of River State Assembly Seal
The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended impeachment proceedings against Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following the intervention of Bola Tinubu earlier this month.
Lawmakers took the decision on Thursday during plenary at the Assembly’s resumed sitting in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
At its first sitting in 2026, the House had initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct.

During plenary, presided over by the Speaker, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally read the notice of allegations.
The accusations include the demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, alleged withholding of funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and refusal to comply with a Supreme Court ruling on the financial autonomy of the legislature.
The Assembly said the process was initiated under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

In a letter dated 16 January 2026, the House asked the state Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, to constitute a seven-member panel to investigate the allegations. However, the Chief Judge declined, citing a subsisting High Court order restraining him from acting on the request.
Governor Fubara and his deputy had separately secured injunctions from a High Court in Port Harcourt halting the impeachment process. Justice Amadi also noted that the Speaker and the Assembly had appealed the restraining order.
The impeachment move came days after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accused the governor of breaching a peace agreement brokered by President Tinubu in 2025.
