Saudi Arabia on Tuesday officially confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon, signalling the commencement of Ramadan 1447, with Muslims set to begin fasting on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
The confirmation of the Hilal marks the start of the Islamic holy month, while Taraweeh prayers will be observed after the Isha prayer on Tuesday night.
A post by @Muslim on X announced, “BREAKING: Saudi Arabia announces the first day of fasting for Ramadan to begin on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
“Taraweeh will begin tonight on the first evening of the blessed month.
“It’s recommended to follow the fasting time designated by your local community and country.”
Following the announcement, Muslims in Nigeria, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, alongside Saudi Arabia and several other nations, will commence fasting at dawn on Wednesday, ushering in a period devoted to prayer, reflection and spiritual renewal.
However, authorities in Japan declared that Ramadan will begin on Thursday, February 19, after its Hilal Vision Committee confirmed that the crescent moon was not sighted.
Similarly, Oman, Singapore and Turkey also announced Thursday as the first day of Ramadan, in line with their lunar observation traditions.
Ramadan is regarded as one of the holiest periods in Islam, observed by Muslims worldwide through fasting, increased prayers and acts of charity.
