The United States (US) has cautioned Nigerian travellers against overstaying their visas, warning that violations could have broader consequences for Nigerians seeking entry into the country for legitimate purposes such as education, business, and family visits.
The warning comes as U.S. immigration authorities intensify enforcement measures and tighten travel controls under the administration of President Donald Trump.
In a statement shared on X on Monday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria emphasised that strict adherence to visa conditions is critical to safeguarding travel access for Nigerians who comply with immigration rules.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the Mission said. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers and families who travel responsibly.”
The Mission also called on Nigerians to assist efforts to curb immigration abuses by reporting suspected cases of visa fraud. It provided dedicated reporting channels, urging the public to send relevant information to AbujaFPU@state.gov or LagosFPU@state.gov.
