The Federal Capital Territory Administration has approved major investments in healthcare, agriculture, and education to strengthen service delivery and improve residents’ welfare.
The Federal Capital Territory Executive Committee (FCT EXCO) has approved a N1.7 billion procurement for twelve brand-new, fully customized ambulances, the first fleet of its kind in nine years — as part of efforts to modernize emergency response services across Abuja.
Chaired by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, the committee also ratified key investments in agriculture, education, water supply, and youth empowerment, underscoring the administration’s multi-sectoral drive to improve residents’ living standards.
Health Sector Gets New Ambulance Fleet
Speaking after the EXCO meeting at the Minister’s Life Camp residence, the Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, confirmed that the ambulances have already been delivered and would soon be commissioned for use.
“These vehicles meet international emergency response standards,” Dr. Fasawe said. “They are designed for efficiency and durability, and with the improved road network across the FCT, we expect faster response times to emergencies.”
She added that the FCTA is collaborating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to ensure a coordinated response through the 112 toll-free emergency line.
Dr. Fasawe further noted that ambulances would no longer be used to transport corpses, as the administration is procuring specialized hearses for that purpose to maintain professionalism and dignity in medical services.
Fertilizer Boost for FCT Farmers
In the agriculture sector, the Mandate Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ango Abdullahi Suleiman, announced EXCO’s ratification of the procurement of MPK fertilizer to support local farmers across the six area councils.
“This initiative aims to put smiles on farmers’ faces and strengthen food security within the FCT,” Suleiman said, expressing optimism for increased crop yield this planting season.
Education and Youth Development Prioritized
For the education sector, the Mandate Secretary for Education, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, disclosed that N384.8 million has been approved for the procurement of WAEC, NECO, and science practical materials for 88 senior secondary schools across the FCT.
“This intervention is to enhance teaching quality, ensure effective preparation for examinations, and improve overall academic performance,” he said.
Similarly, the Mandate Secretary for Youth Development, Hon. Lawan Geidam, revealed that EXCO approved the complete renovation of the Nyanya Youth Centre.
Upon completion, the centre will train young people in metal fabrication, tailoring, sculpting, and ICT, equipping them with technical skills for self-employment and economic empowerment.
Infrastructure and Water Supply
In the infrastructure sector, the Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Richard Dauda, confirmed progress on the resurfacing and reconstruction of roads around the Old Federal Secretariat in Durumi, awarded under emergency provisions to restore access.
Also speaking, the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Chidi Amadi, said approval had been granted for the procurement of water treatment chemicals and automatic gas oils to maintain operations at the Lower Usuma Dam, ensuring steady and safe water supply to residents of the capital city.
FCTA’s Broader Goal
The flurry of new approvals reflects the FCT Administration’s broader strategy to strengthen social infrastructure, from emergency health systems to agricultural productivity and education.
Residents say the move signals a renewed commitment to effective governance, one that could reshape Abuja’s development outlook if followed through with transparent implementation.
