The Director-General of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Aliyu Azizi says the agency is set to roll out a new multipurpose identification card.
The new initiative aims to enhance the functionality of the national identity card, expanding its use beyond personal identification to include additional services.
The updated card will integrate several key features, including biometric data, which will help in streamlining government processes and improve security.
It is designed to serve multiple purposes, including acting as a driver’s license, voter ID, and payment card, among others, in a bid to promote efficiency and reduce redundancy in documentation.
Engr. Aziz emphasized that the new card would play a significant role in Nigeria’s digital transformation, facilitating easier access to government services, financial transactions, and various sectors requiring identification.
He also noted that the rollout of the multipurpose card is in line with the government’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and digitized economy.
The NIMC Chief Executive urged Nigerians to register and update their details to ensure a seamless transition to the new system.
The commission is expected to commence the issuance of the cards in the coming months, with plans to reach all states and territories across the country.
With this initiative, NIMC aims to address challenges associated with multiple forms of identification while providing Nigerians with a more robust and secure means of identity management.
