
Nigeria’s Flamingos delivered a commanding 9-0 win over Niger Republic in their opening game of the 2024 WAFU U17 Girls’ Cup on Thursday at the Ghanaian Soccer Centre of Excellence (GSCE) in Prampram, Ghana.
Shakirat Moshood stole the spotlight with four goals, Janet Akekoromowei recorded a hat-trick, while Peace Effiong and Aisha Animashaun each added to the tally in a match that underscored Nigeria’s dominance.
Flamingos Shine After World Cup Disappointment
The team, largely composed of players who competed at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, bounced back from their quarterfinal exit with a display of exceptional skill and teamwork under coach Bankole Olowookere.
Animashaun opened the scoring in the 5th minute, calmly finishing a cross from Mary Mamudu at the six-yard box. Just two minutes later, Moshood doubled the lead with a stunning 35-yard strike, setting the tone for the rout.
Moshood netted her second goal in the 13th minute with another long-range effort, while Akekoromowei added a clinical fourth. Akekoromowei continued her stellar performance, scoring twice more before halftime, including a powerful header that completed her hat-trick.
Moshood claimed her fourth goal early in the second half with a dazzling solo effort, dribbling past the Nigerien goalkeeper, while Effiong capped off the victory with a late strike.
Focus Turns to Côte d’Ivoire
The Flamingos will now shift their focus to their next Group B match against Côte d’Ivoire on Monday. With their dominant opening performance, the team has set a high standard for the tournament and reaffirmed their status as strong contenders for the title.
