At least eight people have been killed in Niger State after a vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) along a key rural route, in what authorities say is part of a coordinated attack by suspected terrorists.
The explosion occurred on Monday as the vehicle travelled between Nuku and Woro in Borgu Local Government Area. All seven passengers and the driver were killed when the device detonated.
The incident followed the earlier bombing of a major bridge along Luma road, which connects the Luma, Babana and Agwara communities.

The route is a critical link for residents, particularly traders heading to the Babana border market, which holds every Monday.
Security sources said the bridge was destroyed using an IED planted by the attackers, effectively cutting off movement between the affected communities.
Spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident and said security operations are ongoing in the area.
“On 23rd March 2026 at about 6.30 am, a report received revealed that on the same date at about 2 am, suspected terrorists within the park forest used an explosive device and bombed a bridge located along Luma road, Borgu LGA, connecting Luma-Babana-Agwara communities,” he said.
“It was discovered that the bridge was damaged by the hoodlums during security operations in the area. However, monitoring continues while clearance operation is intensified.”
