The second-term inauguration of Anambra State Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has triggered renewed momentum for grassroots football development, following a high-level engagement between the state’s football leadership and an influential figure in African sports governance.
Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, Chikelue Iloenyosi, met with renowned football administrator and lawmaker, Manuel Nascimento, on the sidelines of the swearing-in ceremony, where both parties explored strategies to strengthen youth football structures in the state.
Discussions focused on building a sustainable framework for grassroots football, with emphasis on funding models, talent discovery systems, competitive structures, and infrastructure development.
Nascimento, who serves as Deputy Member of Parliament of Guinea-Bissau and a member of the ECOWAS Parliament, brings extensive experience from his previous role as President of the Guinea-Bissau Football Federation, alongside contributions to CAF governance and FIFA Fair Play initiatives.
Speaking after the meeting, Iloenyosi underscored the urgency of deliberate investment in youth football development.
“The development of grassroots football remains a top priority for us in Anambra. We must deliberately invest in youth competitions, coaching education, and modern facilities to establish a strong football foundation,” Iloenyosi stated.
He highlighted funding as a critical enabler of sustained progress.
“Funding is critical to sustaining grassroots programmes. Through partnerships with government, private sector investors, and international football institutions, we can unlock the immense football potential that exists in our communities,” he added.
Nascimento, widely recognised for governance reforms and grassroots expansion across West Africa, commended the Anambra FA’s forward-looking approach, stressing the broader impact of grassroots systems.
“Strong grassroots systems are essential for national football success. When properly funded and professionally managed, they empower youth, foster unity, and create economic opportunities within the sports sector,” he remarked.
Observers say the interaction signals a growing alignment between Anambra’s football development agenda and continental best practices, with sports diplomacy and international collaboration expected to play a key role in driving long-term growth.
