President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally transmitted the statutory budget of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to the Nigerian Senate for consideration and approval.
The letter conveying the budget proposal was read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary following the lawmakers’ resumption from a three-week recess.
The break had allowed Senate committees to conduct budget defence sessions ahead of legislative deliberations.
Under Nigeria’s constitutional arrangement, the National Assembly exercises legislative authority over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), making approval of the territory’s annual budget the responsibility of the federal legislature.
Last year, President Tinubu submitted a similar request to lawmakers seeking approval for the FCTA’s 2025 Appropriation Bill, which totalled N1.7 trillion.
In the letter read during plenary, the President explained the constitutional basis for forwarding the proposal to the Senate.
“Pursuant to section 299 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, which vests legislative powers over the Federal Capital Territory on the National Assembly, I hereby present the 2025 FCT budget proposal to the Senate for consideration,” the letter stated in part.
Tinubu noted that the spending plan prioritises key development sectors within the capital territory.
“The 2025 FCT Budget Proposal prioritises investment in health care services, job creation, youth empowerment, social welfare services, education infrastructure as well as increasing productivity in agriculture,” the letter added.
According to the President, the proposed budget is designed to stimulate socio-economic growth across the FCT while improving the welfare of residents and lifting more citizens out of poverty.
