Organic fertiliser producers have warned farmers against using cement and other chemicals to preserve food, citing serious health risks and export losses.
The Organic Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (OFPAN) urged farmers to adopt organic farming methods to improve food safety and protect consumers.
OFPAN President, Alhaji Adams Musa, spoke on Friday in Abuja after a viral video showed beans being preserved with cement.
He described the practice as dangerous, saying cement, calcium carbide and similar substances are toxic and not approved for food use. He warned that exposure could cause cancer, organ failure and acute poisoning.

Mr Musa said cement contains corrosive chemicals that can burn the mouth, throat and stomach, adding that ingestion may cause fatal intestinal blockage.
He also linked unsafe preservation methods to the rejection of Nigerian farm produce in international markets, hurting farmers and the economy.
The association called for stronger public awareness and farmer training on safe, organic food production and preservation.
