Alex Iwobi reflects on Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup hopes amid AFCON exit and FIFA dispute.
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi says Nigeria still hopes to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite uncertainty over the team’s campaign.
In an interview with SuperSport Football on Thursday, the 29-year-old reflected on the challenges facing the squad as they balance the desire for African glory with the chance to play on football’s biggest stage.
Asked if Nigeria would prioritise an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title over World Cup qualification, Iwobi admitted the choice was complicated.
“I mean, we’re still waiting, hopefully we can go to the World Cup,” he said.

“But it’s a tough one. Winning AFCON is a great legacy and a memorable moment in your career. At the same time, many players haven’t been to the World Cup. I can’t be selfish and just think about AFCON. It’s a tough decision for all of us.”
Iwobi, who represented Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, said the team feels the weight of players’ dreams to compete at football’s top level.
Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign in Morocco ended before the final, and their World Cup qualifying hopes were dashed after a 1–1 draw with DR Congo in the playoff final. DR Congo advanced 4–3 on penalties to the inter-confederation playoffs in March 2026.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) filed a protest with FIFA, alleging ineligible players for DR Congo. DR Congo rejected the claims, and as of late January, FIFA’s review is still ongoing. Fans are keeping hope alive that a ruling could reopen Nigeria’s path to the 2026 tournament.
