INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announcing the registration of new political parties in Abuja.
Nigeria’s election body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has approved the registration of two new political parties as preparations intensify for the 2027 General Election.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, announced in Abuja that the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) was registered after meeting all legal requirements, while the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was registered following a Federal High Court order.
The decision follows a review of 171 associations that applied for party status. INEC said only DLA fully complied with constitutional and electoral laws after a multi-stage screening process.
Amupitan warned political parties against internal disputes and excessive court cases, saying such actions weaken public trust and distract the commission from its core duties.
