CITAD Executive Director Yunusa Zakari Ya’u criticises the Senate over electoral reforms.
Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has condemned the Nigerian Senate’s decision to reject mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026.
CITAD said the move weakens transparency and threatens the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement on Thursday, CITAD’s Executive Director, Yunusa Zakari Ya’u, said the Senate showed little political will to address problems exposed during the 2023 elections.
He said Nigerians had welcomed assurances by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on electronic transmission, seeing it as a way to prevent result manipulation during collation.

Ya’u noted that many election petitions in 2023 failed because the law did not clearly require electronic transmission of results, calling the Senate’s decision a setback to reform.
CITAD warned that continued uncertainty over the Electoral Act could deepen voter apathy, especially as INEC is expected to release the 2027 election timetable by April.
