Sanitary pad safety concerns spark public debate in Senegal.
Public anger is rising in Senegal over claims that expired raw materials were found at a factory producing sanitary pads and diapers.
The country’s pharmaceutical regulator said it discovered about 1,300 kilograms of expired and unsuitable materials at the Softcare factory during an inspection.
The agency asked the company to withdraw the products from the market until its production process meets safety standards.
Days later, the regulator’s director said documents from Softcare showed the expired materials were not used. But inspectors involved in the visit disagreed, insisting their findings were correct.

Reports on social media claimed some women experienced itching after using the products.
Softcare, a subsidiary of China’s Sunda International, denied using expired materials and rejected bribery allegations made by an inspector. The company said the materials were stored separately and waiting to be destroyed.
