Authorities reinforce shark warnings after a fatal attack at Chifre Beach in Pernambuco, Brazil.
A 13-year-old boy has died after being mauled by a shark at a beach along Brazil’s eastern coast, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Thursday off the coast of Chifre Beach in Pernambuco, a popular tourist region, according to the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT).
Officials said the victim was rushed to hospital following the attack but succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities noted that dozens of beaches across Pernambuco’s coastline have been issued shark-warning alerts, with Chifre Beach displaying four warning signs to caution swimmers.

In response to the fatal attack, CEMIT announced plans to strengthen shark monitoring in the area and reinstate a suspended tracking programme that uses microchips to monitor shark movements.
Data from the committee shows that over 80 shark attacks have been recorded in Pernambuco since 1992, 26 of which were fatal, excluding the most recent incident.
