Peter Obi could exit Peter Obi speaking at a public event
Public affairs analyst Jide Ojo has suggested that Peter Obi could leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) if he fails to secure the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
Ojo made the claim during an interview on Wednesday, warning that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar might outspend Obi in party primaries, particularly if they are conducted indirectly.
“Rumour has it that Atiku has been a very generous spender in party primaries,” Ojo said. “Assuming, without conceding, that Atiku wins in a free and fair ADC primary, I can see Peter Obi leaving the party for another platform.”
He added that Atiku aims to influence who emerges as the ADC’s presidential candidate. “There are fears that he may outspend Peter Obi, especially in indirect primaries,” Ojo said.

Ojo highlighted Obi’s impact on the opposition coalition since leaving the Labour Party (LP). On December 31, 2025, when Obi officially joined the ADC, about four Southeast senators, 16 House of Representatives members, and numerous State Assembly members reportedly defected with him. By contrast, no lawmakers or governors joined Atiku when he left the PDP for the ADC in November 2025.
“Obi has made it clear he intends to be on the ballot in 2027,” Ojo said. “He is not looking to play second fiddle; the prime candidate gets the certificate of return even though the party logo appears on the ballot.”
Both Obi, LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Atiku, PDP’s 2023 candidate, are now among the heavyweight politicians competing for the ADC’s ticket ahead of next year’s election.
