Elon Musk’s platform X announces new safeguards to limit misuse of its AI chatbot, Grok.
Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has announced new restrictions to stop its AI chatbot, Grok, from creating sexualised images of real people, following widespread global criticism.
In a statement on Wednesday, X said it has introduced technical controls to prevent users from editing or generating images of people in revealing clothing such as bikinis, underwear, or similar attire, in places where such content is illegal.
According to X’s safety team, the restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers, and is aimed at limiting misuse of the Grok AI tool.
The move comes hours after California’s Attorney General opened an investigation into xAI, the company behind Grok, over allegations that the chatbot generated non-consensual and sexually explicit images in recent weeks.

Pressure has been mounting on xAI after Grok’s “Spicy Mode” feature reportedly allowed users to create sexualised deepfake images of women and children using simple text prompts.
In the UK, media regulator Ofcom has opened an investigation into whether X breached local laws on harmful content. In France, the commissioner for children has referred the issue to prosecutors, regulators, and the European Union.
The development highlights growing global scrutiny of AI tools and their impact on privacy, child safety, and online harm.
